How Does It Work?
ICON uses intense pulsed light (IPL) and laser technology to deliver energy into the pigment of the hair follicle during the active growth phase. This energy is absorbed by the melanin in the hair, heating and destroying the follicle to prevent future growth. Over a series of sessions, hair becomes finer, lighter, and significantly reduced.
The device features Skintel™ Melanin Reader, which measures your skin’s melanin levels in real time—allowing for customized settings that maximize safety and effectiveness, particularly for lighter to medium skin tones.
Where Can It Be Used?
Cynosure ICON can be used to treat a wide range of areas, including:
- Face (upper lip, chin, cheeks)
- Underarms
- Bikini/Brazilian
- Legs
- Arms
- Chest and back
- Stomach
- Hands and feet
ICON is most effective for Fitzpatrick skin types I–V (light to medium skin tones). It is not recommended for very dark skin tones (Fitzpatrick type VI) due to a higher risk of hyperpigmentation or burns. If your skin type falls outside this range, we will recommend a more suitable device—such as an Nd:YAG laser, which is safer for deeper complexions.
What to Expect
Before Treatment:
- Shave the area 24 hours prior (do not wax, tweeze, or thread)
- Avoid sun exposure, tanning beds, and self-tanners for 2–4 weeks
- Discontinue use of retinoids or exfoliants 3–5 days before treatment
- Let us know if you’re taking antibiotics or medications that increase sun sensitivity
During Treatment:
- Quick sessions: as little as 10 minutes (small area) to 45 minutes (larger areas)
- Sensation: feels like a warm snap or elastic flick, with built-in cooling to minimize discomfort
After Treatment:
- Mild redness or swelling may occur, typically resolving in a few hours
- Avoid hot showers, saunas, or tight clothing for 24 hours
- Use sunscreen diligently on exposed areas
- Do not wax or tweeze between treatments (shaving only)
